Scabies is a type of itchy skin infestation mainly caused by mites – Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies patient’s must be careful not to spread their condition to others through close skin-to-skin contact. It can also be transmitted through clothing or bedding. As mites are most active during night time, patients experience an intense itch whilst trying to sleep.
Harley St Healthcare Top Tip: Avoid scratching the infected area, as it can lead to sores which become infected and worsen the itch further.
Indirect transmission of scabies is more likely when a person is suffering from crusted scabies.
Symptoms of scabies are as a result to a hypersensitivity reaction to mites and their faeces. In such a situation, itching can persist for quite a few weeks after treatment even if all the eggs/mites are killed. If in case itching still persists more than 2 to 4 weeks after getting treatment, it is advisable to see a doctor.
If in case rash lesions or burrows continue to appear for long time period, then it calls for immediate treatment.
